New Delhi, July 11: Former Chief Justices of India J S Khehar and D Y Chandrachud appeared before the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Friday as part of its ongoing deliberations on the proposed ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill.

The committee, chaired by BJP MP P P Chaudhary, is holding its eighth sitting and has been engaging with legal experts and former jurists to gather a broad range of opinions before finalising its report.

Both Khehar and Chandrachud, in their earlier observations, did not find the concept of simultaneous elections to be in conflict with the Constitution’s basic structure. However, they had raised concerns over the extent of authority the bill seeks to grant the Election Commission and offered suggestions related to the broader context of India’s parliamentary democracy.

The panel has previously heard from former Chief Justices U U Lalit and Ranjan Gogoi as well. Though neither raised objections to the constitutionality of the proposed framework, they too flagged specific provisions and made suggestions for improvement.
