Thiruvananthapuram, July 21: V.S. Achuthanandan, one of the founding members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a towering figure in Kerala’s political history, passed away today at the age of 101.
He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Achuthanandan served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011 and held the distinction of being the longest-serving Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, a role he fulfilled for 15 years.

He led the Opposition in three terms—1992 to 1996, 2001 to 2006, and again from 2011 to 2016.
Between 1980 and 1992, he served as Secretary of the CPM’s Kerala State Committee and later as the LDF convener from 1996 to 2000.
A lifelong advocate for workers’ rights and social justice, he played a pivotal role in shaping Kerala’s progressive political landscape.
In a tribute, the CPI(M) said, “We salute Comrade V.S. Achuthanandan—an architect of Kerala’s progressive journey, a voice of the voiceless, and a lifelong champion of the working class.”
