THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Kolkata, August 8: Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader passed away at the age of 80. He passed away on Thursday in Kolkata after a prolonged illness.

Bhattacharjee had been suffering from breathing difficulties and was hospitalized in July. He had been dealing with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and other age-related health issues. His treatment was later managed at his home in Kolkata, where he breathed his last.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee served as Chief Minister from November 2000 to May 2011 and was a member of the CPI(M) Politburo. He was the second and final CPI(M) leader to hold the position after Jyoti Basu.

In the 2011 assembly elections, Bhattacharjee’s CPI(M) was defeated by Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, bringing a close to a 34-year period of communist governance in West Bengal.
