Jamshedpur, Oct 15: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has officially announced Somesh Soren as its candidate for the upcoming Ghatshila Assembly by-election, ending days of speculation within party circles.
The decision was finalised during a crucial meeting of the JMM Central Committee in Ranchi, chaired by party working president Hemant Soren.
Party insiders revealed that Somesh, a young and dynamic leader with deep roots in East Singhbhum district, was chosen following extensive consultations with local party units and senior leaders.

The Ghatshila seat fell vacant following the demise of senior JMM leader and state minister Ramdas Soren, Somesh’s father.
In his first reaction after being named the candidate, Somesh expressed gratitude to the party leadership and pledged to “carry forward the legacy of Shibu Soren’s movement for Jharkhand’s identity and justice.”
“Ghatshila has always stood with JMM in our struggle for people’s rights. I will work to strengthen the bond between the people and the party,” Somesh said.

The party’s central committee also reviewed organisational preparedness and outlined a grassroots campaign strategy, with senior leaders including Basant Soren and Stephen Marandi present at the meeting.
The JMM is expected to launch a series of public meetings and outreach events across the constituency next week as it seeks to retain one of its traditional strongholds.
BJP Bets on Babulal Soren to Reclaim Kolhan Ground
Earlier the same day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced Babulal Soren as its candidate for the November 11 bypoll.
Babulal, son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren (who later joined the BJP), had contested the 2024 Assembly election from Ghatshila and has now been renominated by the party.
Following the announcement, Babulal took to social media to thank the party’s top leadership, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President J.P. Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Jharkhand BJP President Babulal Marandi for their trust.
Party sources indicated that the BJP’s decision reflects a strategic move to consolidate tribal votes and strengthen its base in the Kolhan region, traditionally considered a JMM bastion.
The Ghatshila seat, political observers say, holds symbolic importance for the BJP as it seeks to regain lost ground in East Singhbhum.
High-Voltage Campaign Ahead
With both JMM and BJP fielding prominent tribal leaders with strong local connect, the Ghatshila by-election is shaping up to be a closely fought contest.
The campaign is expected to centre on local development, employment, and tribal rights, with both parties planning extensive public outreach in the coming weeks.
Political analysts believe the November 11 bypoll will act as a barometer of public sentiment in Jharkhand.
