GST Council meeting on Sept 9, deliberation likely on rate rationalization

New Delhi, August 13: The GST Council meeting will be held on September 9 under the chairmanship of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The Council wrote on its official account on the social media platform X, “The 54th meeting of the GST Council will be held on 9 September 9, 2024, at New Delhi.”

The GST Council, comprising finance ministers from the central and state governments, is the top decision-making body regarding Goods and Services Tax (GST). The GST Council has been functioning since July 1, 2017.

In the upcoming meeting, discussions are expected on rationalizing tax rates, reducing tax slabs, and removing the inverted duty structure under GST.

The previous council meeting was held on June 23, after which Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned that in the next GST Council meeting, a presentation will be given by the Group of Ministers (GoM) led by Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister, Samrat Chaudhary.

This presentation will cover the status of work on rate rationalization, the aspects addressed by the committee, and the tasks still pending before the committee.
