Ramgarh, August 29: A 52-year-old man was trampled to death by a herd of elephants in the Janiyamara forest, located along the Rajrappa temple road under Rajrappa police station limits, early Friday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Mustaq Ansari, a resident of Murpa in Gola block. He was on his way to load slurry at the Rajrappa washery when he came face-to-face with the herd. The elephants attacked him, leaving him dead on the spot.

Following the incident, a forest department team reached the location, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. Officials also provided compensation to Ansari’s family to assist with funeral expenses.

Authorities have urged villagers to remain cautious in elephant-affected areas and avoid entering forested zones alone.

Panic Among Villagers and Devotees

Residents reported that the same herd had been roaming in the Janiyamara forest since Thursday night. During this time, the elephants also demolished a roadside hotel belonging to Sarju Karmali and Ajay Karmali.

The attack created widespread panic, temporarily disrupting traffic on the road to the Rajrappa temple — a route frequently used by pilgrims and tourists. Locals say elephant herds often stray into the area, damaging crops and property.

Demand for Safety Measures

The fatal attack has reignited calls from villagers and temple visitors for stronger measures to manage human-elephant conflict. Locals are urging the district administration and forest department to implement long-term strategies to ensure both public safety and elephant protection.
