IIT (ISM) Dhanbad honours alumnus Naresh Vashisht with Special Centenary Award at Dallas alumni meet

Dhanbad, July 18: The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, honoured distinguished alumnus Naresh Vashisht, a Petroleum Engineering graduate of the 1967 batch, with its Special Centenary Award 2025 during the institute’s alumni meet held in Dallas, Texas, on July 14. The award recognises Vashisht’s outstanding contributions to the global energy sector and his transformative support for research and innovation at IIT (ISM).

The award was presented by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in the presence of Prof. Rajeev Upadhyay, Dean (Alumni Affairs), members of the institute’s alumni community and other distinguished guests. Vashisht was also presented with the institute’s Alumni Card in recognition of his enduring association with his alma mater.

Recognised for Strengthening Research and Innovation

A globally respected entrepreneur and energy industry leader, Vashisht has played a key role in advancing IIT (ISM)’s academic and research infrastructure by supporting two major facilities on campus.

These include the Naresh Vashisht Tinkering and Innovation Lab, which encourages hands-on learning, innovation and entrepreneurship among students, and the Naresh Vashisht Centre for Hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Technology, established to promote cutting-edge research in hydrogen energy and carbon management technologies.

The institute said these initiatives have significantly strengthened its research capabilities in emerging energy technologies while creating new opportunities for students and researchers.

Director Praises Alumnus’s Vision

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sukumar Mishra said Vashisht’s visionary support had helped reinforce IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s research and innovation ecosystem.

“His contributions reflect the strong bond between IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and its alumni community and demonstrate how alumni can actively shape the institute’s future,” Mishra said.

Dean (Alumni Affairs) Prof. Rajeev Upadhyay said the institute was proud to recognise alumni whose professional achievements and generosity continue to enrich IIT (ISM)’s academic and research landscape.

He said Vashisht’s commitment to giving back to his alma mater would inspire alumni across the world to contribute to the institute’s next century of excellence.
