SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, Jan 19: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on Monday organised a Centenary Talk on “Transforming India’s Mining Sector”, highlighting the role of policy reforms, project management units, and sustainable operations in modernising the industry.

The talk was organised by the Department of Applied Geophysics at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre (GJLT), with Mahesh G. Pimpramule, Associate Partner, KPMG India, as the chief speaker.

Focus on strategic and sustainable mining

Addressing faculty members and students, Pimpramule presented a comprehensive overview of the evolving mining ecosystem and stressed the need for strategic, time-bound, and sustainable approaches in mine development and operations.

His presentation covered the global and Indian coal mining landscape, the process flow of mine operationalisation, challenges in modern mining operations, and global best practices aimed at achieving optimal outcomes.

Role of Project Management Units highlighted

Pimpramule emphasised the importance of structured implementation, explaining how Project Management Units (PMUs) can enhance effective monitoring, timely execution, and accountability in mining projects.

Referring to global developments, he noted that coal and critical minerals have regained prominence due to geopolitical disruptions and growing energy security concerns.

India’s mining outlook

Speaking on India’s mining scenario, he underlined the country’s continued dependence on coal for power generation, while also highlighting ongoing efforts towards modernisation through safer and more sustainable mining practices, supported by emerging technologies.

Faculty interactions and collaboration prospects

Earlier, Prof. Saumen Maiti, Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics, welcomed and felicitated the guest speaker. Prof. Sanjit Kumar Pal, Professor, Department of Applied Geophysics, introduced Pimpramule by presenting his brief biosketch. Prof. Bhanwar Singh Choudhary, Head of the Department of Mining Engineering, was also present.

The programme provided a valuable platform for industry–academia interaction, with Pimpramule expressing interest in engaging with students and faculty members on internships, placements, and research collaborations with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
