IIT (ISM) Dhanbad hosts meet on geoengineering challenges for hydropower projects

 

Dhanbad, Jan 22: A three-day Executive Development Programme (EDP) on “Geoengineering Challenges for Hydropower Projects” concluded at IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, with experts from across the country discussing complex geo-engineering issues related to hydropower development.

Dr Pijush Pal Roy, former scientist at CSIR-CIMFR, Dhanbad, and Acting Director of CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur, inaugurated the programme as the chief guest.

Held Under Patronage of IIT (ISM) Leadership

The programme was conducted under the patronage of Prof Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM). Prof Keka Ojha, Dean (CEP), Prof S. Sarangi, Head, Department of Applied Geology, Prof Kripamoy Sarkar, Programme Coordinator, and Prof S. K. Pal, Co-coordinator, were present during the event.

NHPC-Sponsored Training for Professionals

Sponsored by NHPC Limited, Faridabad, a Government of India Navratna enterprise, the programme saw participation from NHPC professionals working across different regions of the country. The training aimed to enhance their technical preparedness for tackling complex geo-engineering challenges in hydropower projects.

Seven eminent speakers delivered expert lectures covering disciplines such as geology, geophysics, civil engineering and mining engineering.

The programme included sessions on tunnel excavation through innovative drilling and blasting techniques, numerical analysis and mitigation of landslides, multi-hazard micro-zonation with case studies from the Joshimath region, use of geophysical tools, advanced geo-engineering practices, and mechanised tunnelling using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).

The Executive Development Programme concluded successfully with faculty members and programme coordinators marking the completion of the three-day academic and technical engagement.
