Dhanbad, March 27: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has organised a two-day national workshop highlighting the role of mathematics in healthcare, bringing together experts to explore how mathematical models can support medical science.

Workshop highlights role of mathematics in healthcare research
The Department of Mathematics & Computing inaugurated the workshop titled “From Equations to Life: Mathematical Insights into Human Health” on March 27 at its Seminar Hall. Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra attended as Chief Guest, along with Head of Department Prof. S. P. Tiwari and Convenor Prof. R. K. Upadhyay.
Addressing participants, Prof. Mishra stressed the growing importance of mathematical tools in solving complex healthcare challenges, calling such interdisciplinary efforts “the need of the hour.” Prof. Upadhyay spoke about the role of mathematical equations in understanding human health, while Prof. Tiwari highlighted the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare research.

Experts discuss medical modelling, AI and interdisciplinary research
Organised under the Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) initiative of ANRF in collaboration with NASI Jharkhand Chapter, the workshop is aimed at selected teachers from across Jharkhand. It focuses on mathematical biology through expert lectures and interactive sessions.
The programme features talks by noted academicians, including Prof. B. V. Rathish Kumar (IIT Kanpur), Dr. Subhamoy Mandal (IIT Kharagpur), Dr. Subhas Khajanchi (Visva-Bharati), Dr. Gajendra K. Vishwakarma, and Dr. Umakanta Tripathy (IIT ISM Dhanbad). Topics include medical imaging, Bayesian modelling, Parkinson’s disease modelling, and cardiac motion analysis.
The workshop also includes simulation-based discussions, campus visits, and interactive sessions, and will conclude on March 28. More than 25 participants are attending offline, while over 60 have joined online, reflecting strong academic interest in interdisciplinary healthcare research.
