IIT (ISM) Dhanbad trains school students on earthquake safety

 

Dhanbad, April 11: The Observational Seismology Laboratory of the Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad organised an “Earthquake Information and Awareness Outreach Program” for students of G.S. Adiwasi High School, Yadavpur, on Friday.

The programme aimed to improve scientific awareness and preparedness among school students about earthquake hazards. Prof. Mohit Agrawal led an interactive session, explaining the basics of earthquakes, their causes, and practical steps to reduce risks. He emphasised that awareness and preparedness are key to minimising the impact of natural disasters and building resilient communities.

Students took part in practical learning through models and demonstrations, supported by research scholars, master’s students, and project assistants. The session focused on making complex scientific concepts easy to understand and relatable.

Earlier, Prof. Soumen Maiti, Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of such outreach programmes in connecting scientific research with society.

Part of national science outreach initiative

The programme was conducted under a project funded by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, which promotes science awareness across the country.

Research scholars and students, including Abhishek Tiwari, Rahul Nagle, Gokul, Subhajeet Manjhi, Honey Tomar, Samapti Mondal, Shwetha Pulli, Himanshu, and Ankit Patel, along with Chandraprakash Bhaskar, were actively involved in the event. The visiting students were accompanied by Dr. Yoganand Jha and Kumar Sundaram, who also delivered the vote of thanks.
