PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Sept 12: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert for Jharkhand predicting thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds (with a maximum speed of 30–40 kmph) at isolated places in the state in next 24 hours.

The warning extends into September 14 and 15, when heavy rainfall is likely over north-eastern and adjoining central parts of Jharkhand along with thunderstorm activity.

Synoptic Situation

The IMD bulletin highlighted that the monsoon trough at mean sea level currently passes through Sri Ganganagar, Bareilly, Barabanki, Dehri, Purulia, Digha and extends southeastwards into the northeast Bay of Bengal.

Adding to this, an upper air cyclonic circulation over South Odisha and adjoining north coastal Andhra Pradesh, extending up to 4.5 Km above mean sea level and tilting southwards with height, continues to persist. Furthermore, a trough is running from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim to the west-central Bay of Bengal across Jharkhand, strengthening the weather system over the region.

Weather Realizations in Past 24 Hours

Monsoon activity remained normal over Jharkhand.

Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms was reported from many places across the state.

The highest rainfall of around 60 mm was recorded at Dhalbhumgarh Block in East Singhbhum district.

The highest maximum temperature of 36.7°C was recorded at Seraikela.

The lowest minimum temperature of 20.6°C was reported at Latehar.

Impact and Advisory

The IMD has cautioned residents to stay alert, as thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds may cause localized damage, particularly to weak structures, standing crops, and trees.

Commuters been advised to exercise caution during heavy rainfall spells that may lead to waterlogging and traffic disruption in low-lying areas.
