IMD issues heavy rain alert for Kolhan today; thunderstorms, lightning likely across Jharkhand

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, August 5: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an active monsoon over Jharkhand on Wednesday, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph at isolated places across the state.

The weather office has also issued a heavy rainfall alert for isolated areas in the north-eastern, north-western and south-eastern regions of Jharkhand, including the Kolhan districts of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharsawan.

Active Monsoon Conditions to Trigger Widespread Rain

According to the IMD, the prevailing synoptic conditions continue to favour widespread monsoon activity across Jharkhand.

The monsoon trough currently extends from Anupgarh through Delhi, Shahjahanpur, Basti and Chapra before reaching Nagaland, ensuring a steady inflow of moisture over eastern India.

Weather experts said the rainfall activity has been further intensified by an upper air cyclonic circulation over the central parts of south Uttar Pradesh, another persistent cyclonic circulation over northwest Bihar, and a fresh upper air cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal adjoining the Andhra Pradesh coast.

These weather systems are expected to keep rainfall activity vigorous across Jharkhand over the next few days.

People have been urged to avoid taking shelter under isolated trees, near electric poles or other exposed structures during lightning activity. The weather office has also advised the public to follow official weather advisories, as intermittent heavy showers may trigger localized waterlogging, reduced visibility and traffic disruptions in several areas.

The forecast indicates that the active monsoon phase is likely to continue throughout the week, with heavy rainfall expected to shift to different parts of Jharkhand between August 6 and August 8.
