THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Ranchi,  Nov.  30: India defeated South Africa by 17 runs in the first ODI at the JSCA International Stadium, Ranchi, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The match drew a strong crowd, with enthusiastic support for the home team throughout the day.

Kohli’s Century Anchors India’s Big Total

India chose to bat first and posted a commanding 349 for 8.

Virat Kohli delivered a classic ODI hundred, mixing patience with superb stroke play in the middle overs. Rohit Sharma provided an aggressive start, while KL Rahul stabilized the innings during the middle phase before accelerating toward the end.

India also benefitted from quick lower-order runs, which helped push the total beyond 340—a strong score on a pitch that offered good bounce and batting conditions.

South Africa Start Well but Lose Steam in Middle Overs

South Africa began their chase confidently, building partnerships at the top and middle order. The JSCA pitch remained good for batting, and the visitors stayed in the hunt until the last 10 overs.

However, India’s bowlers tightened their lines during the crucial middle and death overs, stopping the flow of boundaries.

The visitors finished at 332 in 49.2 overs, falling 17 runs short.

Kuldeep Leads India’s Bowling Effort

Kuldeep Yadav was the standout performer with the ball. His variations troubled South African batsmen, especially in the middle overs, where he picked key wickets.

Harshit Rana bowled with good pace and accuracy, picking three wickets. Arshdeep Singh provided early breakthroughs and returned later for crucial overs. Prasidh Krishna contributed with one wicket.

India’s fielding was sharp, with several well-timed stops in the outfield preventing boundaries during key moments.

South Africa’s Half-Centurions Keep the Chase Alive

Matthew Breetzke, Marco Jansen, and Corbin Bosch all scored half-centuries.
Each of them built partnerships that kept South Africa competitive:

  • Breetzke (72) played confidently at the top.

  • Jansen (70) provided a steady middle-order presence.

  • Bosch (67) accelerated as the required run-rate climbed.

Despite their efforts, South Africa lost wickets at important moments, which hurt their momentum.

India Aim to Clinch Series in Next Match

With this win, India take a 1-0 lead and will look to seal the series in the second ODI. The JSCA pitch offered a balanced contest between bat and ball, and another high-scoring match is expected.
