New Delhi, Dec 23: The Union Health Ministry reported on Saturday that the number of Covid-19 infections in India increased by 752 in a single day, to the highest level since May 21. Meanwhile, the number of active cases surpassed 3,000, reaching 3,420. Concerns concerning a rise in sub-variant JN.1 cases accompanied the surge in new Covid cases.
The number of deaths has increased to 5,33,332 after four more were reported in the last 24 hours, two from Kerala and one from each of Rajasthan and Karnataka, according to figures updated at 8 am. The recorded case fatality rate stood at 1.18 per cent.
The total number of Covid cases in India was over 4.50 crore (4,50,07,964).

Cases spike in 17 states
The ministry’s statistics, which was updated at 8 a.m. today, indicates that the number of current Covid-19 cases increased in 17 states. Among these, the states that were impacted were Kerala (266), Karnataka (70), Maharashtra (15), Tamil Nadu (13) and Gujarat (12).
In the last 24 hours, a total of 325 individuals have recovered from Covid-19, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 4,44,71,212, as reported by the Health Ministry. The national recovery rate is currently at 98.81 per cent.
220.67 crore Covid vaccination shots have been given nationwide to date, according to the ministry’s website.
