THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Jan 8: India will not extradite Bangladesh’s exiled Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Amid growing demands for her extradition in Dhaka, there are reports that India has extended Sheikh Hasina’s visa.

She had fled Bangladesh in August 2024 following a coup, as protests by students against her intensified in the country.

According to sources, her visa was recently extended to allow her to remain in India. However, sources also mention that India has not granted her asylum, as there is no specific law in India regarding refugees.

Bangladesh’s demand for extradition

Regarding Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, Bangladesh’s interim government had sent a diplomatic note to India’s Ministry of External Affairs on December 23 requesting her extradition.

However, there has been no positive response from the Indian government so far. According to Indian officials, Dhaka has not completed the necessary formalities required for the extradition.

Bangladesh revokes passports of Sheikh Hasina and others

Reports suggest that the Bangladesh government has decided to cancel the passports of several individuals, including Sheikh Hasina. These individuals are allegedly accused of involvement in forced disappearances and killings during the protests in July.

The Bangladesh Immigration and Passport Department announced on Tuesday that the passports of Sheikh Hasina and 96 other individuals have been revoked.

Second arrest warrant issued against Sheikh Hasina

On January 6, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal issued a second arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina. It is reported that the tribunal has directed the Bangladesh police to arrest Sheikh Hasina and 11 others and present them before the tribunal on February 12.
