Dhanbad, June 15: Buoyed by the approval of the postgraduate (PG) course from the National Medical Council (NMC), the Orthopaedics department of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad has added another feather in its cap with evolving alternative treatment of total knee replacement pain.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
A team of SNMMCH under Dr DP Bhushan (HoD) orthopaedics) cured the pain of four patients from Total Knee Replacement by administrating platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections.
Dr Bhushan said that PRP carries vascular growth factors and platelet-derived factors. PRP injection is administered on the pain spot of the knee that forms cartilage and gives relaxation for a long time.
Dr Bhushan said PRP is a complex process made from the patient’s blood in the blood bank.

Free-of-cost treatment at SNMMCH
Since this treatment facility is available at selected corporate hospitals and nursing homes, the patient has to pay Rs 15,000 to 20,000. But at government-owned SNMMCH Dhanbad, it has been done free of cost.
“Earlier, such a facility was not available in SNMMCH. Now since infrastructure and facilities have been restored, Total Knee Replacement treatment is being done from PRP therapy,” said Dr Bhushan.
SNMMCH blood bank in-charge BK Pandey said that it is the first step of the blood bank. Shortly, blood banks would start work on regenerative rehabilitation and others, he added.
SNMMCH principal cum superintendent Dr Jyotiranjan Prasad congratulated Dr DP Bhushan and his team for starting a new method of treatment in the hospital.
