Daltonganj, June 15: A one-day workshop on the control and containment of drug abuse was held today at the Zila School.

It was presided over by the district education officer cum district programme officer Durganand Jha.

The workshop on the control and containment of the drug holds significance as more and more youngsters are getting lured to it, some by habit, some by choice and some by the thrust of poor economy.

There is no mohalla in the town of Daltonganj where there is no drug addict or drug peddler. Every ‘mohalla’ has one of the two. In some mohallas, both co-exist.

Stress of studies

Speaking on the occasion, DEO Durganand Jha said, “Stress of studies and an acute sense of cut-throat competition drive a youngster to try something to keep them forgetful of the stress and strain and from here the youngsters get addicted to narcotics.”

Jha said, “Guardians and parents build tremendous pressure on their wards who when find it difficult to cope with take to drug and that begins a downhill journey of them.”

Ill effects of bad company

“Students of classes 9 to 12 are very gullible and susceptible to the ill effects of bad company from where the more the youngsters try to wriggle out, the more they plunge into the bad company,” reminded Jha.

The DEO said, “Our state chief minister is determined to contain and curb drug abuse and the teaching fraternity is equally determined and committed to deliver the message to students to say a big and strong no to drugs.”

There is a week-long programme beginning June 18 where there will be a quiz, poster making, essay writing, Prabhat Pheri, cycle rally etc all at the centre of it a strong message to curb drug abuse.

It’s a massive exercise for awareness against drugs and how it ruins the health of an individual and his family.

There was a time in Palamu when the lottery was playing havoc with the people. Today it’s a drug.

DEO Durganand Jha said, “It’s our effort to make our students learn before any harm comes to them.”
