Jamshedpur, Jan 16: Marking the auspicious Makar Sankranti, the Utkal Association held a ‘Jhoti’ competition among the housewives, giving them an opportunity to show off their expertise in performing their day-to-day household religious activities.
Over 40 women participated in the competition which was organised by the association’s Sri Jagannath temple committee amidst festivity.
Like Rangoli, the Jhoti is also a kind of artistic form that the women in the Odiya community do while performing the Puja of Goddess Laxmi at their homes, praying for prosperity.

With the senior advocate Manoranjan Dash, Sangita Behera and Dr Binita Panigrahi staging as judges, three participants namely Anjali Das, Pooja Mallick and Kunmun Das were adjudged first, second and third respectively.
Other participants doing impressive Jhoti include Suhasini Ratha, Ruby Patra, Leena Kabi, Pravati Mohanty, Mitrabinda Sahu, Geeta Goud, Satyabhama Behera, Suchismita Pani, Sabita Pani and Triveni Mahapatra.
Manoranjan Prasayat, a key functionary of the Sri Jagannath temple committee while talking to The Jharkhand Story said the competition was organised to explore the artistic skills of the housewives who otherwise generally remain confined to the kitchen and looking after their household activities only.
