“Waste disposal is one of the many issues that India is currently grappling with. With rapid urbanization, a growing population, and under-planned cities, the waste problem is increasing day by day. The landfills in most cities are already overflowing, with no space to accommodate multiplying volumes of urban waste. We are thankful to Tata Steel UISL for the initiative as it will pave the way for strengthening a sustainable future,” commented Ranjan.
40% organic waste out of total by Jamshedpur hotels
The overarching goal of this collaboration is to extend the Bio Gas Waste Management system to all hotels in Jamshedpur. An added benefit of the system is that its byproduct serves as valuable manure for plants, promoting a circular economy.
According to Ranjan, the hotels in Jamshedpur generate substantial amounts of urban waste daily, with organic waste constituting 40% of the total.
Unfortunately, most of this waste ends up in landfills, and its perceived value is often deemed zero or even negative. The Bio Gas Waste Management system offers a practical solution to tap into the untapped energy potential of organic waste.
Hospitality sector a major waste generator
The hospitality sector is recognized as a significant waste generator in the country. The complex challenge of managing food waste from hotels, restaurants, resorts, and other commercial hospitality centres is one that the industry has been grappling with.
Ideally, there should be a closed loop between waste creation and recycling, with hotels managing their own waste and reducing the burden on municipal corporations.
The partnership between JHRA and Tata Steel UISL aligns with the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat initiative, emphasizing the hospitality industry’s role in converting waste into resources.
By pioneering sustainable waste management practices, the industry could contribute significantly to India’s efforts to reduce its $180 billion fossil fuel imports.
