Jamshedpur, Feb 8: A wild elephant was killed in a fierce clash between two herds of tuskers in Ghatsila close to the Bengal border in the East Singhbhum district.
One of the warring herds of elephants which was in migration mode remained belligerent after the death of one of them and has started moving towards the Chakulia jungle today.
The clash between the elephant herds took place at Makuli jungle in Ghatsila on Monday, leading the forest department to come to know about it on Tuesday.
Though a team of forest department officials had reached the spot immediately, but having seen the elephants — about a dozen – surrounding their dead companion, the officials waited for a long time before returning back. On the other hand, another herd had moved towards the adjoining Jhatijharna jungle.

The forest department officials turned up at Majuli jungle on Wednesday afternoon and carried out the necessary inspection. A vet who had accompanied the officials conducted an autopsy.
The elephant which was killed was about 10 years old and had bore marks of grievous injuries on a number of parts of its body.
According to sources, the clash between the two elephants had lasted for hours together in the dense jungle. As a result of the prolonged clash, several trees were damaged.
Jamshedpur DFO, Mamta Priyadarshi under whose jurisdiction the Makuli jungle falls confirmed about the death of a migratory elephant due to a clash between separate herds in Ghatsila.
“The elephant which was killed was among the two migratory herds. Both the herds have now moved away towards Chakulia, ” said the DFO while talking to The Jharkhand Story.
