Jharkhand: MBA graduate held for bid to murder uncle over land dispute in Daltonganj

SP Kapil Chaudhary briefing newsmen in Daltonganj on Wednesday in regard to the arrest of the MBA youth in an attempt to murder case .

Daltonganj, June 25: An MBA graduate was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his uncle over a long-running family land dispute in Daltonganj, Palamu police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Pritam Tiwary (28), was arrested by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Sadar SDPO Rajesh Yadav and later remanded to judicial custody.

Addressing a press conference, Palamu Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary said Pritam allegedly shot at his uncle, Sanjay Tiwary (50), on June 20.

Police recovered the country-made pistol allegedly used in the crime along with three 7.65 mm cartridges.

Land dispute at the centre of attack

According to the SP, the uncle and nephew have been locked in a legal battle for years over ownership of more than 22 decimals of prime land in Daltonganj, valued at over Rs 1 crore.

“Sanjay claims ownership of the land, while Pritam maintains that he is the rightful owner and alleges that forged documents were used to stake the claim,” Chaudhary said.

Police said Pritam had also accused his uncle of obstructing his access through the disputed land, escalating tensions between the two.

Sanjay sustained a gunshot injury to the lower right side of his chest. He underwent surgery and is recovering, police said.

Earlier attack, four-day manhunt

Police said this was not the first violent clash between the two relatives. In April 2023, Pritam had allegedly made another attempt on Sanjay’s life, from which he survived.

Following the latest incident, Sanjay’s father, Law Tiwary, lodged an FIR with Daltonganj Town police on June 21, naming Pritam as the sole accused.

A nine-member SIT launched multiple raids before arresting Pritam near Chiyanki Hawai Adda on June 24.

The SIT comprised Inspector-cum-Officer-in-Charge Jyoti Lal Rajwar, sub-inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors and constables under the supervision of SDPO Rajesh Yadav.

Police said the arrest ended a four-day search operation and brought relief after public criticism over the delay in tracing the accused.
