Dhanbad, July 9: Jharkhand medicos have endorsed the directive of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for all practicing doctors to get registered in the National Medical Register (NMR).

The NMC has recently issued a decree in this regard for medical practitioners to get registered in NMR so that a centralized database of doctors can be prepared for information on registered doctors and checking quackery.

At present doctors get registered with their concerned state Medical Council for practice

The new ruling has evoked mixed reactions from doctors in different states especially those who practice in multiple states. But medicos in Jharkhand have supported it in a single voice.

Coordinator of the Jharkhand chapter of India Medical Association (IMA) and former national vice-president Dr Ajay Kumar Singh of Ranchi while calling the decree in the interest of doctors said that it is an ongoing process (registration of practitioner) coming for a long time.

“It is well known that without NMC permission no doctor can practice in any corner of the state. At present the doctor gets registered with the state medical council. Now he will have to get registered in NMR. So, nothing is new but at the same time it will help the government to check quackery”, said Dr Ajay Kumar Singh.

The Continuous Medical Education (CME) group of national and international doctors have also supported the NMC order. Dhanbad-based CME group journal editor  Dr NK Singh of Dhanbad said that from NMR there are advantages and disadvantages both.

“New regulation is important because every year doctors register in the Indian Medical Registry.  Some of them migrate, some retire and some stop practicing or even die.  But the new registration process will give us an exact count of the current total of practitioners,” said Dr NK Singh.

Dr Singh added that the register will provide an estimate of public and private doctors and help in specifying fake doctors.

Dr Arvind Kumar Arya of Jamshedpur also opined in support of NMC’s new ruling and said that the government will have a record of practitioner doctors’ strength in the country and an individual can also ensure the authenticity of practitioners by demanding doctor’s registration number.
