Jharkhand minister Sudivya Sonu cremated with full state honours in Giridih

Giridih, September 6: Jharkhand minister and Giridih MLA Sudivya Kumar Sonu was cremated at the Harsinghraydeeh cremation ground here on Sunday, with his son Shreyash performing the last rites.

Sonu’s final journey began from his residence and proceeded to the cremation ground, drawing a large gathering of political leaders, elected representatives, government officials, JMM workers, supporters and members of the public.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren was among those who attended the final journey and, along with several others, shouldered the bier of the deceased leader. A large number of people gathered along the route to pay their last respects, with many supporters and party workers seen mourning the loss of their leader.

At Harsinghraydeeh, Sonu was accorded a guard of honour by security personnel before his last rites were performed with full state honours. His son Shreyash lit the funeral pyre, marking the final farewell to the two-time Giridih MLA and senior JMM leader.

Earlier, Chief Minister Hemant Soren met the bereaved family and expressed his condolences. He described Sonu’s sudden death as deeply painful and an irreparable loss for Jharkhand.

Soren said the state had lost a dedicated public representative, committed minister and young leader. He added that Sonu’s contributions and public service would always be remembered.

JMM leader and MLA Kalpana Soren also paid floral tribute to the mortal remains of Sudivya Kumar Sonu.

The large turnout at the cremation reflected the political and social connect Sonu had built in Giridih. Leaders and workers from the political fraternity, along with people from different sections of society, joined the final journey.

Sonu died on Sunday morning at Mercy Hospital in Giridih following a cardiac arrest. His death has triggered widespread grief across Jharkhand’s political and social circles.

Jharkhand government schools, colleges to remain closed on September 7

Meanwhile, government schools and colleges across Jharkhand will remain closed on Monday, September 7, following the state government’s declaration of two days of official mourning over the death of minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu.

According to the Jharkhand Education Project Council, academic activities in all government schools and colleges will remain suspended on September 7 as part of the state mourning.

The state government has declared September 6 and 7 as days of official mourning. During this period, the national flag at government buildings where it is regularly flown will remain at half-mast.

No official government functions will be organised in the state during the mourning period.
