Daltonganj, April 9: 50 to 55 complaints about tube wells going non-functional come every day on average in Palamu.

As summer becomes more intense and severe, the number of tube wells going dry is bound to upswing here.

The repair rate of non-functional tube wells is around 40 a day.  Thus, there is always a backlog of 10 to 15 non-functional tube wells daily.

Executive engineer of the drinking water and sanitation department here, Rameshwar Gupta, said, “We have 13 gangs which carry out repairing of the non-functional tube wells. It is 40 repairs a day on average.”

There are 21,367 tube wells in the district Palamu, and roughly speaking, 10 per cent of these tubes go out of order for one reason or another every day, said the executive engineer Gupta.

Gupta said, “I had been to Panki. There, I saw a resident taking drinking water from a stand post with the help of a long pipe to water their garden! This is simply problematic. It is unsocial. How can anyone be so ruthless with the drinking water?” The long pipe was seized.

Gupta said, “I saw one man washing his bike with the water of the Jal Minar. Is this just? Should any society approve of it?”

The executive engineer of the drinking water and sanitation department said there is a wastage of drinking water than its use.

He said where one pot of water would have sufficed; people spend a bucketful of water. He urged people to save a single drop of water before it gets too late.
