Daltonganj, August 12: Following the intervention of Palamu DC Shashi Ranjan, the drinking water and sanitation department here went for deep borings in the water-starved MMCH Daltonganj.

Sources said the DC Shashi Ranjan was too concerned about the frequent students’ stir here for water and electricity.

DC visited college during students’ stir

This outgone summer was the cruellest of all the summers in this medical college. There were angry demonstrations by the medicos.

A very long sit-in by the medical students was held here very recently where they had forced the principal, Dr Kamender Prasad, to stay out of the main gate of the college for hours. Their anger was for safe drinking water and electricity.

The same day of the medicos’ stir the DC had inspected the medical college and had seen things for himself. He knew deep boring was the only way out and he asked the drinking water and sanitation department here to go for it.

Executive engineer of drinking water and sanitation department Rameshwar Gupta said “I am told the borings have been successful. There are 6 to 9 inches of underground water. We believe the coming summer will be easier for this medical college in terms of the water.”

It was Gupta who was also persuading the medical college management to go for deep borings.

Three successful borings done so far

The final shot came when the DC Shashi Ranjan ordered it.

Till the time of reporting three borings done were complete and successful.

It was of the depth 460 feet, 880 feet and 800 feet. One was boring, and the 4th one failed after 40 feet when the soil caved in, rendering the boring ‘impossible’.

The underground table of water is 6 inches to 9 inches, which in Palamu is seen as a reservoir of underground water.
