Dhanbad, June 13: The management of BIT Sindri, a state government-run engineering institute, has imposed a one-year academic ban on two students for their involvement in a violent incident on campus that occurred during the late hours of 12 May.

The students, identified as Harshit Kumar, a first-year student, and Yashvardhan, a second-year student, were found to be involved in the altercation that escalated into property damage within the hostel premises.

According to General Warden Professor R.K. Verma, the disciplinary action was recommended by a high-level committee comprising all deans and heads of departments, which convened on Thursday evening. In addition to the academic suspension, both students have been fined ₹25,000 each for their role in the disturbances.

The incident, which took place during the night of 12–13 May, reportedly began over a minor disagreement between two student groups and escalated into a physical clash. The confrontation resulted in injuries to three students and property damage estimated at around ₹10 lakh.

Following the incident, an FIR was lodged at the local police station, and BIT Sindri’s director established an internal inquiry committee headed by Professor Verma to investigate the matter.

Based on the committee’s findings, the institute has also imposed fines of up to ₹50,000 on 31 students from various academic years for their involvement in the damage caused during the unrest.
