Daltonganj March 31: The district peace committee needs to be reconstituted and revamped. A civil society activist Ramnath Chandravanshi had raised this demand for reconstitution of the peace committee in the recently held meeting of it in the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Smriti Nagar Bhavan.

The chief of the district peace committee Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shashi Ranjan too agreed to the need of the reconstitution of the district peace committee.

Inactive Members and Lack of Representation

There are a good many people on the panel of the district peace committee who skip such a meeting for long. Such members be rested and in place of them, new faces be brought in.

Further, the district peace committee has hardly any members of the Christian, Jain, and Namdhari communities. These communities need to be properly included in the district peace committee.

Participation of women in the district peace committee has been very notional which requires to be strengthened.

Need for Greater Women’s Participation

A handful of women do attend such a meeting at the thana level only and a few of them are given a few minutes to speak which is either always a praise for the administration or toeing the line of others.

Self-Help Group (SHG) of women can be quite a useful asset to the district peace committee.

Expanding Representation for a More Effective Committee

Representation of sportsmen, medical representatives, university teachers and students, hoteliers etc should be encouraged.

It has been seen when there is any communal aberration, members of the district peace committee slip into their ivory tower maintaining a safe distance from what is happening around.

It was most visible in Panki two years ago when there was communal conflagration there. The so-called peace activists then were behaving like a communal artisan.
