Lack of focus on geology education

Gupta, an alumnus of IIT ISM’s Department of Applied Geophysics (1963 batch), emphasized the lack of focus on geology education at the school level.

He highlighted the critical role of geology in understanding the sustainability of planet Earth, stating, “The sustainability of the planet depends on how we learn about it, and understanding geology is crucial as it includes all relevant sciences, including geophysics.”

Gupta also praised the Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT ISM, calling it one of the most significant centres for learning in this field.

Importance of geohazard prediction

Dr J.R. Kayal, a 1969 alumnus, stressed the importance of geohazard prediction in saving lives and property. He urged geophysicists to prioritize mapping geohazards for sustainable mining and environmental safety.

Prof. Dheeraj Kumar echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the need for geophysicists to provide solutions to issues like landslides and other geohazards encountered in mining engineering.

Prof. Sanjit Kumar Pal, Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics, shed light on the department’s rich history and expressed appreciation for the efforts in organizing the seminar.

He emphasized the importance of the conference’s focused approach to addressing pressing issues in earth science and geophysics. The event is expected to foster meaningful discussions and advancements in the field.
