Dhanbad, April 5: Dr Kalachand Sain, director of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology-DST, Dehradun, called upon researchers, scientists, and environmentalists to concentrate on meaningful research that can solve society’s problems.
Geoconfluence 2024 at IIT ISM
Addressing the inaugural function of Geoconfluence 2024 at IIT ISM today, Dr Sain, an alumnus of IIT (ISM)-M Sc Tech-Applied Geophysics (1988), said that meaningful science is the need of the hour as it is the only way to understand societal challenges, scientific issues, and industrial challenges.
“We aim to build a society that can sustain any sort of disaster,” said Dr Sain, adding that the scientific fraternity needs to think innovatively, as innovation is key to solving society’s problems.
Dr Sain is Hon. Prof at the Academy of Scientific and Academic Research, Ghaziabad.

Geoconfluence 2024, was organised by Department of Applied Geophysics with Indian Geophysical Union at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre of IIT ISM.
Seismic Group at CSIR-NGRI
Dr Sain, former head of the Seismic Group at CSIR-NGRI, Hyderabad, said that climate change and its consequences and green energy are buzzwords around which a lot of meaningful research should be done.
”Dr Sain, who also worked as a field officer in IIT (ISM) in 1988-89, said that different sources of green and renewable energy are available, and we need to exploit all of them to produce an alternate energy resource.
Green House Gases
“Fossil fuel is still being used despite the fact that it generates CO2 and Green House Gases, and the researcher needs to find efficient ways to capture CO2 through adsorption, absorption, and hydration.
“Find out ways to convert CO2 into carbonates, which can be used in drugs, flushes, sewage, detergents, and for various other purposes,” he said.
Sain said the researchers should work to convert CO2 into Methanol and its derivatives, which can be used in the pharmaceutical industry, paint, hydrochemicals, and several other products.
Earlier, Prof JK Pattanayak, director of IIT ISM, recalled Dr Sain’s research contributions and said that students and PhD scholars of IIT (ISM) will greatly benefit from interaction with Dr Kalachand Sain.
Sanjit Kumar Pal, Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Geophysics, gave details of activities. Prof Anil Kumar Chaubey, Prof Mohit Agarwal, and Prof Saumen Maity were also present during the session.
