Ranchi, June 10: Jailed former Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren today took oath as a member of the Legislative Assembly. She has been elected from the Gandey assembly constituency.

Assembly Speaker Ravindra Nath Mahto administered the oath to Kalpana in his chamber in the Assembly. During this, Chief Minister Champai Soren and Minister Satyanand Bhokta were present with Kalpana Soren.

Kalpana defeats BJP candidate Dilip Verma

In the Gandey assembly by-election held along with the Lok Sabha elections, Kalpana Soren contested on a JMM ticket as a joint candidate of the INDI Alliance and defeated BJP candidate Dilip Verma by more than 27,000 votes.

JMM’s Dr Sarfaraz vacated seat for Kalpana

Notably, JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad had vacated the Gandey seat by resigning amidst speculation in November last year that the ED might arrest Hemant Soren in the land scam. The Gandey seat was vacated for Kalpana Soren as it was considered a safe seat for the JMM.
