Jamshedpur, July 20: As part of the capacity-building program, the Mass Communication Department of Karim City College organized a workshop on the production and broadcasting of television sports programs.

Tejvinder Singh from Star Sports provides production insights

The workshop was specifically tailored for Mass Communication students and featured Tejvinder Singh from Star Sports as the resource person.

Singh, who recently returned to the city after covering T20 cricket where India emerged victorious, has a wealth of experience, having spent 15 years in sports broadcasting and production. He has worked with renowned cricketers such as Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Irfan Pathan, Virat Kohli, and Akash Chopra.

During the workshop, Singh provided students with in-depth insights into the intricacies of sports program production. He explained that more than 30 different types of cameras are used in the live broadcast of cricket to ensure a seamless master relay.

Emphasizing the importance of alertness during sports broadcasting, he highlighted that the primary goal is to entertain the audience without any interruptions. He pointed out the crucial role of the data team in making the broadcast appear natural to viewers, despite the extensive teamwork and preparation involved.

Role of commentators

Discussing the role of commentators, Singh noted that most come well-prepared, with the production team constantly updating them through talkback systems. This coordination enables the effective relay of slow-motion replays, advertisements, and background footage.

He praised Navjot Singh Sidhu for his thorough preparation and described Sunil Gavaskar as exceptionally hardworking and disciplined.

Question and answer session

Singh also engaged with students during a question-and-answer session, providing comprehensive information on various aspects of sports broadcasting, including different camera angles, rundown processes, and the final output.

The interactive session saw enthusiastic participation from students such as Yash Raichand, Kulpreet Bhamra, Anisha Dutta, Nikhil, Olivia Biswas, Yash Bahl, Azka Ahmed, Nitesh Singh, Shalini Srivastava, Shefali, Shams Qadri, Sahil Bhalotia, Nutan Parchai, and Ayush Asthana, who asked insightful questions.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from Dr. Neha Tiwari, Head of the Mass Communication Department, who introduced Singh. BA Semester 2 student Aishwarya Raj presented  Singh with a plant as a gesture of welcome.

The workshop concluded with postgraduate student Shaifali delivering a vote of thanks. Dr. Mohammad Riyaz, Principal of Karim City College, congratulated the department on the successful organization of the event.
