Daltonganj, April 13: A giant squirrel was found today in the Bareysarn range of the tiger reserve Palamu.

The giant squirrel is called Malabar squirrel and, in local lingo, Larmusa.

It was sighted near the Sambhar enclosure near Kujrum Road.

Black plum trees

The giant squirrel is most often found on black plum trees, which are locally known as Jamun trees. Other trees like Saal and Aasan are also their favourite tree houses.

Forester in-charge Paramjeet Tiwary said the sighting of the giant squirrel is not much, but it is sighted at frequent intervals.

Giant squirrel is a threatened animal

The giant squirrel is a threatened animal, as the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) declared.

It is long, up to 50 cm, and weighs 2 kg. It is diurnal. It has multi-colour on its body, with pink lips and nose.

The giant squirrel is said to be the state animal of Maharashtra. It is purely herbivorous.
