SUBHASH MISHRA

Jamshedpur, Jan 31: Jharkhand government owned Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) in Jamshedpur has applied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for an increase in both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats starting from the 2025-26 academic session. The institution currently holds approval for 100 MBBS and 45 PG seats.

Proposed increase in MBBS and PG seats

The medical college has requested an increase of 50 MBBS seats (totaling 150) and six additional PG seats (for a total of 51), with the expansion focusing on the PSM and FMT departments. This application reflects the institution’s ongoing efforts to accommodate more medical students.

Principal confirms application amid faculty shortage

Principal Prof. (Dr.) Diwakar Hansda confirmed the application, acknowledging the faculty shortage but asserting that MGMMCH is well-equipped to handle the additional students in both MBBS and PG courses.

He highlighted the growing demand for seats at MGMMCH, which has become a top choice for students across Jharkhand and beyond.

“No doubt there is a crisis of faculty members but the institution is capable of housing more students in MBBS and post graduate courses”, said Dr Hansda.

Faculty strength and departmental details

MGMMCH currently has one professor (Dr M Tudu) and one associate professor (Dr DS Rao) in the PSM department. Prof. (Dr.) M Tudu is the lone professor in PSM among the state government-owned five medical colleges.

Despite the faculty constraints, Dr. Hansda emphasized that the college has sufficient staff in the PSM and FMT departments to support the proposed increase in PG seats.

Faculty and department comparisons across Jharkhand

In contrast, other state medical colleges like Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) and Phulo Jhano Medical College Hospital (PJMCH) have lower-level faculty handling the PSM departments, with some being assistant or associate professors. Mednirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in Palamu has a contractual PSM professor.

At SNMMCH Dhanbad, the PSM department is headed by Associate Professor Dr. RR Jha. In contrast, at PJMCH Dumka, the PSM department is led by Assistant Professor Dr. Mrinal. While MMCH Palamu has a professor in PSM, Dr. Kamrul Hussan, but he serves on a contractual basis.
