Daltonganj, August 12: It is the police in Palamu that catch criminals; it’s the central jail that overflows with inmates. The inmates are the ‘forwardees’ of the police through the judiciary.
It was more a step in the central jail than a step out of it in the last 7 days in Palamu.
Every criminal caught by police is remanded in judicial custody and it is the central jail that houses them.
Under orders of the DGP Jharkhand Anurag Gupta a 7-day long drive of ‘dhar pakar’ (read arrest), in official lingo S Drive, of the criminals was conducted in Palamu where police had more hits than misses.
Average of 15 arrests per day last week
This ‘dhar pakar’ started on August 4 and when it wound up on August 10, police in Palamu had caught and jailed 110 criminals. It comes to little over 15 arrests a day in this 7-day move of the police.
SP Reeshma Ramesan has confirmed 110 arrests of the criminals during the period August 4 to 10.
Only on two days of this dhar pakar drive, August 7 and 10, the number of arrests was in single digits.
It was 6 and 9 arrests on August 7 and 10 respectively. In the rest of the days, the number of arrests was in double digits.

Central jail superintendent sends estimate to govt for new 400 capacity barrack
This correspondent spoke to the central jail superintendent Bhagirath Karjee to know how he and his team managed this rush of 110 remands in judicial custody in all these 7 days in the central jail.
Karjee said “They came in bulk. They were adjusted. There is no way out. We are here to adjust every such footfall. There is no scope of any refusal.”
On being asked that such a huge inflow of the arrested criminals in the central jail must have created a space problem for the already packed inmates here Karjee gave a very intelligent but elusive reply, “We have sent an estimate to the government for a new 400 capacity barrack to be built here. It will be an extended barrack which will offer more and more leg spaces.”
He further said, ” On approval of the estimate, the Jharkhand state police housing corporation ltd will be constructing it. We don’t know what time it will entail.”
As of date, the central jail here has 1052 inmates said Karjee.

Police tracing activities of ex-Naxals: Palamu SP
SP Reeshma Ramesan said, “Our police are busy finding out the ex-Naxals, their supporters and what they are up to.”
Splinter group TSPC’s trail is the longest one. Next is the JJMP. Incidentally, the CPI Maoist’s trail is now shorter than the two TSPC and JJMP after their historic debacle of the Burha Pahar residency.
Reeshma Ramesan said police found a few of the trails have left for eternity. One was said to be pulling a rickshaw in Ranchi. Palamu police are verifying every trail. The pressure is on them now.
Sources said the DGP Jharkhand is to stem the revert to crime by those now on bail or supporters of the Naxals giving any prop up to them.
