PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Sept 18: Local legislator Saryu Roy today wrote a letter to state finance minister Rameshwar Oraon seeking funds for necessary repair works at the hostel of MGM Medical College in Dimna, located some 5 Km away from steel city.

The letter highlighted the plight of students due to the sorry condition of the hostel

Condition of the hostel

The legislator also attached pictures and videos showing unhygienic conditions and also water logging caused at the hostel rooms during the recent downpour.

The videos are self-explanatory and clearly reveal the inhuman conditions at the hostel.

“You are aware that in Jharkhand, after RIMS in Ranchi, MGM Medical College in Jamshedpur ranks second among the medical colleges of the state. Only those students who score good marks in NEET competitive examination get the chance to enrol in MGM Medical College. You can easily imagine the inhuman conditions in which such brilliant students live in the hostel and study amidst many difficulties This is shameful for all of us, ” stated Roy in the letter to the finance minister.

Previous efforts and govt inaction

Roy further said in the letter that it is not that the students of MGM Medical College have not raised their voices about the plight of their hostel.

“They had knocked at the doors of the college administration. Requests have also been made by the medical college principal to the health minister. Last year, the health minister, on the request of the students, inspected their hostel and assured to improve the situation, but to no avail. It would not be out of place to mention that this college and hospital are situated in the constituency of the health minister, yet such is the plight of the college hostel and the hospital, ” pointed out the legislator in the letter.

Request for urgent funding

The Jamshedpur East MLA Roy said, ” Through this letter, I would like to request you that the finance department should provide special funds to repair the MGM Medical College hostel and make it suitable for meritorious students to live and study. Since the assembly elections are likely to be declared within a month and in the meanwhile the assembly session is also not possible, and the first supplementary budget of the state after the annual budget has also been passed, hence the option of providing funds from the government treasury is open. Considering the repair work of MGM Medical College hostel on an urgent basis, expenditure can be made under this head from the -Contingency Fund- or the health secretary can be directed to divert the unused amounts of various items in the department to the hostel repair head. To transfer and provide the required amount they should send the proposal to the finance department. Both these options can be implemented only with the consent of the finance department. The only thing the health secretary and the health minister can do is send a proposal to this effect to the finance department.”

The legislator requested the minister to take necessary appropriate action to improve the condition of the medical college hostel.

He also requested the finance minister to direct the health secretary to take appropriate steps in this regard.
