Dhanbad, March 22: New research by Continuous Medical Education (CME) India experts has revealed that sleeping deficiency leads women to obesity and other complications.
CME India group editor Dr NK Singh said that this factor (sleeping deficiency) has emerged as one of the major reasons for obesity in women in research conducted by an eminent physician of Coimbatore, who is a member of the group.
Dr Singh said that though the authorised agency has not conducted any survey on this point, patients’ reports show that cases of urban women are higher than those of rural ones in Jharkhand and across the country.
As per the findings of CME India expert physicians, women suffer from obesity at various levels- mild – moderate-severe, hormonal induced, pregnancy/post-pregnancy induced, and menopause induced.
At all these levels, hormonal imbalance plays a big role and sleep plays a major role in hormonal imbalance.

In a normal state, Gherlin, the hunger hormone, tells us to eat, and leptin, the satiety hormone, signals us to stop eating.
“Studies have found that people who sleep less suffer from imbalances of these hormones, where both will not function properly,” said the expert.
In such cases, Gherlin will give a continuous signal for hunger, and leptin will not signal to stop eating, and the final effect is overeating and obesity.
The expert physician said besides obesity, sleeplessness affects the thinking capacity, irritates the mind and peaks our emotions which induces cravings, binge eating and high snacking.
Prof (Dr) Pratibha Rai, gynaecology and obstetrics department of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad admitted that the ratio of women patients with complain of sleeping deficiency and increasing obesity have increased.
“These cases are being witnessed on a large scale, and mostly women from urban pockets complain about this,” said Prof ( Dr) Rai.
She further added that the women suffering from domestic problems, anxiety, hypertension, and others are not able to sleep properly, which leads them to obesity and other complications.
