Daltonganj, March 9: Noted English teacher Prof. S.C. Mishra passed away shortly after midnight on Monday, following a prolonged illness. He was over 80.

Prof Mishra had retired from the English Department of GLA College, Daltonganj, more than fifteen years ago but remained active in social and cultural circles of the town until about seven to eight months ago, when he became bedridden, said his relative Prof Krishnandan.

A respected academic and social figure

Known for his scholarship and eloquence, Prof Mishra was widely respected in academic and social circles in Daltonganj. He was a familiar presence at cultural and educational events in the town, often invited as chief guest or keynote speaker.

Apart from being a distinguished teacher and orator, he was also known as a keen sports enthusiast. Colleagues recall that he maintained a distance from college politics throughout his career.

Condolences pour in

Students, teachers, journalists and people from different walks of life have expressed deep sorrow over his passing.

Prof Mishra was a pensioner of Ranchi University and had authored a couple of books during his lifetime. Those close to him remember him as a passionate admirer of the Koyel River, which flows through Daltonganj.

His demise is widely being seen as a significant loss to the academic and cultural community of the town.
