Ranchi, May 31: St Xavier’s College Ranchi on Thursday witnessed the birth of XES (Xavier Economic Society) by the Department of Economics and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in the Fr CD Brouwer Auditorium.
Established in 1969 the Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of St Xavier’s College Ranchi. The XES aims to cultivate a dynamic and inclusive environment where students can deepen their understanding of economic sustainability, contemporary economic issues and policies. It plans to organise a series of seminars, lectures, debates, quizzes and educational excursions.

XISS Ranchi Director Dr Marianus Kujur S.J. was the guest speaker on the occasion. Principal of St Xavier’s College Ranchi Fr. Dr Nabore Lakra, SJ, Head of the Department of Economics Dr Marcus Barla, IQAC coordinator Dr Shiv Kumar, Examination controller Professor B.K Sinha, faculty members of Economics department Dr Vinoy Pandey, Dr Dheeraj Mani Pathak, Professor Zeba Ashraf, Professor Ashish Ranjan, Professor Anshu Kujur and other faculty members of different departments also graced the occasion.

Fr Dr Nabore Lakra congratulated the newly formed Economic Society and spoke on the importance of financial knowledge.
Dr Marcus Barla
Dr Marcus Barla introduced the guest speaker as a seasoned scholar, and prolific academician holding a Ph.D from the Delhi School of Economics and a Post-Doctoral degree from the Center of Latin American Studies of Foreign Service, Georgetown University Washington D.C. He further shared his works and training programs at various national and international levels.
Dr Dhiraj Pathak officially introduced the Economic Society to the attendees. Dr Marianus Kujur, S.J. delivered the maiden lecture on the topic ” Development with Dignity: A Tribal perspective”. In his lectures, he deeply covered challenges faced by the tribals through the lens of the economy. He further debunked the idea of the economy being the sole driver of development and advocated for holistic development. His deep analysis and research works on tribal issues provided an enriching experience for the students.
