Jamshedpur, July 11: Three persons including a woman were killed in lightning at Bhadodih village under the Chandil thana area in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district about 40 km away from here on Wednesday evening.

While two of those killed identified as Subhadra Majhi and Bijres Majhi were mother and son, the third dead was identified as Suku Mardi, all residents of Hamsada village in Chandil.

Three others identified as Sugi Murmu of Hamsada village, and Indrajit Singh as well as Gurupado Singh of Makulakocha village were seriously injured in the lightning. The three have been taken to MGM Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) where their condition is described as critical.

There was a weekly market at the Bhadohi village where the victims had come from the adjoining villages for shopping and selling their goods.

As the weekly market activities were in progress, dark clouds started to drift over the sky. A little while later it started raining, leading the shoppers to run inside a plastic tent for shelter. It was this period of time that a lightning struck the tent, killing three on the spot there.

Soon after the incident, other villagers came to the rescue of the victims and rushed them all to the medical college hospital, about an hour-long drive from the spot. At the hospital, the doctors on emergency duty declared three of the victims as dead.
