Dhanbad, June 25: Six-week training on advanced mining surveying technology for Coal India Limited (CIL) surveyors began today at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad.
Altogether 82 surveyors of CIL subsidiaries including Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), North Eastern Coalfields Limited (NECL) are attending the course.
IIT ISM director Prof Sukumar Mishra was the chief guest and inaugurated the programme at the Executive Development Centre of the institute. The course is being organized by the Department of Mining Engineering of IIT (ISM) in association with the TEXMiN Foundation,
Addressing the mine surveyors that included a couple of surveyors of private mine excavators, Prof Sukumar Mishra shed light on the significance of mine surveying in ensuring safety and resource management in mining operations, through the process of measurement, mapping and management of underground and surface mines.

“Accurate measurement of shaft, tunnels, underground workings helps to prevent mishaps like inundations, roof fall and equipment damages,” said the director and added that advanced technologies like satellite imagery, drones can help to detect changes in the surface.
The course is being conducted in order to apprise mine surveyors about geodesy, remote sensing, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), slope stability and subsidence monitoring.
Prof Dheeraj Kumar, deputy director of IIT (ISM), who is the course coordinator apprised the surveyors that apart from the lectures and tutorials, discussion, excursion, and extensive field visit to the underground mines will be conducted as part of the course.
Prof Devi Prasad Mishra, Head of Department of Mining Engineering appealed to mine surveyors to take maximum advantage of the six-week course being organized with the aim of sharpening their mine surveying skills.
Associate Professor of the Mining Engineering Department, Prof Vasanta Govind Kumar Villuri as one of the two course co-coordinators along with Prof Mohammed Soyeb Alam said that such courses are periodically organized for the mine surveyors in order to train them about the usage of the latest technologies in mines surveying.
