PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Nov 12: A potential disaster was narrowly avoided on Wednesday morning when an unmanned freight train barreled into another stationary goods train at Adityapur Railway Yard, near Sharma Basti.

The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m., causing massive damage but, fortunately, no loss of life.

Eyewitnesses said the runaway freight train, reportedly moving without an engine, broke through the yard’s boundary wall before colliding head-on with a parked goods train.

The impact was so powerful that several wagons derailed and climbed over each other, triggering panic among nearby workers and residents.

At the time, several labourers were engaged in unloading operations and line inspections.

Hearing the loud crash, they ran for cover just in time, escaping unhurt. Locals gathered at the site and promptly informed railway authorities.

Senior railway officials, along with technical and yard management teams, rushed to the scene to assess the situation.

Efforts to clear the damaged wagons and restore normal operations began immediately.

Preliminary investigations suggest a possible brake failure, technical fault, or operational lapse behind the incident.

Railway sources said that while the collision temporarily disrupted train movement, services were gradually restored.

Officials have launched a detailed inquiry into the cause of the mishap and are examining whether safety protocols were violated.

Despite the heavy damage, the absence of casualties brought a sigh of relief across the railway department.
