Ranchi, July 15: World Plastic Surgery Day was celebrated at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, with a series of academic and awareness programmes organized by the Department of Plastic Surgery. The event featured expert discussions, paper presentations, and a quiz competition to mark the occasion.
Dr. Priyanka Karketa, Unit Head of the Plastic Surgery Department, welcomed the participants and inaugurated the expert panel discussion on various topics related to plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Senior Surgeons Lead Discussions on Plastic Surgery Trends
The discussion session witnessed the participation of eminent doctors, including Dr. Ajoy Kumar Singh (HoD of Surgery, RIMS), Prof. (Dr.) Dipendra Sinha, Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Bodra, Dr. Krishna Murari, Dr. Sandeep Agarwal, and several noted plastic surgeons such as Dr. Arvind Prakash, Dr. Anant Sinha, Dr. Vijay Shankar Das, Dr. Raj Kumar Pathak, Dr. Vikrant Ranjan, and Dr. Prince Gupta. Prof. (Dr.) Prabhat Kumar, HoD of Dermatology, also took part in the discussions.

Call for Counselling Before Cosmetic Surgeries
Dr. Ajoy Kumar Singh, a veteran plastic surgeon and patron of the Jharkhand Plastic Surgeons Association (JPSA), emphasized the need for counselling patients before conducting cosmetic procedures.
He pointed out that cosmetic surgeries are typically patient-driven rather than medically necessary, and pre-surgical counselling can help prevent unnecessary interventions.
“We must caution the younger generation through counselling and awareness campaigns to avoid unnecessary cosmetic surgeries,” said Dr. Singh during his address.

Active Participation by Young Doctors and Scholars
The event saw enthusiastic participation from both clinical and academic surgeons working in the plastic surgery department. More than a dozen clinical papers were presented by young doctors including Dr. Priyanka Karketa, Dr. Rajiv Kumar Raj, Dr. Arun, Dr. Vivek, Dr. Harshita, Dr. Abhiraj, and Dr. Nishant.
Quiz Contest in Memory of Dr. Saurabh Sharma
A mega quiz contest was also organized in memory of the late Dr. Saurabh Sharma, a budding plastic surgeon posted at RIMS who tragically lost his life in a road accident. Dr. Sharma’s wife, son, and brother were present during the event.
Young doctors from across the state participated in the contest and were awarded certificates. Several senior surgeons were also felicitated on the occasion.

Plastic Surgery Awareness Week Launched
To commemorate World Plastic Surgery Day, the Jharkhand Plastic Surgeons Association also announced the launch of a week-long Plastic Surgery Awareness Week.
The campaign aims to educate the public on the scope, benefits, and responsible practice of plastic surgery through outreach and educational activities across the state.
