RANCHI, September 6: Advanced surgical techniques for oral cancer treatment and reconstruction were showcased during Jharkhand OncoRecon 2026, a two-day live operative workshop held at Jharkhand Cancer Centre, Ranchi, on September 5 and 6.
The conference focused on bringing complex oral cancer reconstruction procedures closer to patients in Jharkhand. Such procedures were earlier often referred to specialised centres in cities such as Mumbai and Hyderabad, while the workshop demonstrated that advanced reconstructive surgery can now be undertaken locally in Ranchi.
Live surgery demonstrates advanced reconstruction
A key highlight of the workshop was the live demonstration of oral cancer surgery and reconstruction by experienced surgeons.
Dr Vineet Pillania, Consultant at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, attended as the guest faculty and demonstrated his surgical technique and approach to oral cancer reconstruction.
Dr Prince Kumar Gupta demonstrated a fibula free flap procedure, a complex reconstructive technique in which bone from the fibula is used to reconstruct the mandible. The accompanying skin paddle is used to repair defects involving the skin and oral mucosa following cancer surgery.
The procedures provided participating surgeons and residents with an opportunity to observe advanced operative techniques and approaches in real time.
Plastic surgeons and residents participate
Several senior plastic surgeons from Jharkhand and neighbouring regions participated in the workshop, including Dr Ajoy Kumar Singh, Dr Arvind Prakash, Dr Anant Sinha, Dr Vikrant, Dr Priyanka and Dr Tanmay, along with Dr Pankaj Sindhodia and Dr VSP Sinha from Jamshedpur.
Dr Lalit Minz, President-Elect of the Bihar-Jharkhand Association of Plastic Surgeons, also participated in the event. Members of the association took an active part in the workshop.

A large number of junior plastic surgeons and residents from across Jharkhand and other parts of the country also attended the conference, gaining exposure to advanced techniques in oral cancer surgery and reconstruction.
The organisers said the central objective of Jharkhand OncoRecon 2026 was to strengthen specialised cancer reconstruction services within the state and provide surgeons with access to contemporary operative techniques through hands-on academic and clinical learning.
