Jharkhand: Palamu Tiger Reserve is home to rare species of birds

Daltonganj, Jan 1: Not only have the tigers started residing in Palamu Tiger Reserve, but rare bird species have also been found, either unreported or just written off this tiger reserve.

Birds were surveyed merely on their sighting and sound. No scientific method was adopted in the past to explore the avian species.

One such rare bird spotted in the recent bird survey is found to be a white-eared bulbul, about which it is said this bird white-eared bulbul is seen or found in MP only.

Arshyan Shahid, a master’s degree holder in wildlife science at AMU, Aligarh, is doing a bird survey in the tiger reserve Palamu, said, “I saw just one white-eared bulbul. I believe it’s here, perchance. It’s good it is surviving.”

Apart from the white-eared bulbul, five rare species of warblers were also spotted in the tiger reserve in this bird survey.

Warblers are insect-eating birds and are pretty tiny in size, so much so that warblers get hidden in the giant leaves of the tree in the tiger reserve, said Arshyan Shahid.

The outgone year 2023 has been relatively luckier for the tiger reserve Palamu. There came tigers. One in March. Three in November. There is a report of one more tiger.

P K Jena, deputy director of the north division of the tiger reserve, said, ” Bird survey is done through MacKinnon Lists Technique. It’s a delicate and arduous job for doing a bird survey.”

Kutku range of the tiger reserve Palamu is a home for many birds, some of them rare too.

In the Kutku range, birds like Malabar Whistling Thrush, Hornbill, Red Breasted Flycatcher etc were spotted during the survey.

Deputy director of the South division of the Tiger Reserve, Kumar Ashish, told this correspondent, “Once we have data on the species of birds here, we will try to promote bird watching here in the tiger reserve. Bird watching is quite a thrill.”
