Jharkhand Paralympics: Chhotu, Kajal shine as fastest sprinters

Ranchi, Feb 3: Chhotu Singh from Ranchi and Kajal Kumari from Jamtara emerged as the fastest male and female sprinters of Jharkhand, winning the 100-meter races in their respective categories at the Jharkhand State Paralympic Athletics Championship.

The championship concluded at Morhabadi Ground with remarkable performances from para-athletes across the state.

Akash Singh from Giridih made a mark by securing two gold medals, winning the Shot Put event and later clinching gold in the Discus Throw. His outstanding achievements highlighted the championship’s competitive spirit.

Prize Distribution and Future Prospects

The prize distribution ceremony was graced by former Jharkhand administrative officer Bijay Kumar Dutta as the chief guest. He awarded medals and certificates to the victorious Paralympic athletes.

Jharkhand State Paralympic Association Secretary Avinash Kumar Tiwari announced that the top performers from various events would be selected to represent the state in the 23rd National Paralympic Championship, scheduled to take place in Chennai from February 17 to 20.

Medal Winners in Track and Field Events

Apart from his gold in the 100m sprint, Chhotu Singh also bagged a silver medal in javelin throw. In the men’s 100m race, Dewashish Mahto won silver, while Anish Sheikh secured the bronze.

In the men’s 200m race, Sachin Kumar Sahu clinched gold, followed by Ajay Kumar Paswan (silver) and Dilip Kumar (bronze). Harsh Mahto finished in fourth place.

In the women’s 100m race, Kajal Kumari dominated the track, finishing first, while Kiran Kumari and Sushma Kumari secured second and third positions, respectively.

Field Events Medalists

  • Shot Put: Akash Singh (Giridih) won gold, while Anand Kumar Singh (Jamshedpur) and Pradeep Oraon took silver and bronze, respectively. Alataf Alam, Shibu Rajak, and Rohit Kumar finished fourth, fifth, and sixth.
  • Javelin Throw: Angad Kumar (Jamshedpur) clinched gold, followed by Chhotu Singh (silver) and Rajesh Kumar Mahto (bronze).
  • Discus Throw: Akash Kumar Singh won gold, while Rajesh Kumar Mahto secured silver.

A Successful Championship with Record-Breaking Feats

General Secretary Avinash Kumar Tiwari expressed satisfaction over the championship’s success, emphasizing that several records were set by the athletes.

The event showcased the potential of Jharkhand’s para-athletes and strengthened hopes for a strong performance at the upcoming national championship.
