Ranchi, Oct. 30: The upcoming electoral battle for the Pakur assembly seat is moving beyond traditional boundaries. There, the political landscape is not just a matter of candidates but has become a complex game of caste and religious equations.

The triangular contest between Congress, AJSU, and the Samajwadi Party (SP) has added intrigue and complexity to the race. While the Congress is relying on its strong Muslim vote bank, the AJSU and the SP candidates are attempting to breach this base.

Each party is carefully balancing familial backgrounds, old connections, and coalition dynamics as they seek to secure the support of their voters. This election is not just about the strength of the candidates but is also a test of their influence within these intricate caste and religious equations.

Congress Banks on Nishat Alam

The Congress has fielded Nishat Alam, the wife of former Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam, as its candidate to maintain its stronghold on Muslim voters. Alamgir Alam is languishing in jail after the ED booked in the tender scam.

Pakur has a substantial Muslim voter base that traditionally supports the Congress. This strategic move by Congress is seen as a bid to fortify its Muslim vote bank.

AJSU’s Azhar Islam: A Bold Move with BJP Support

The AJSU Party, allied with the NDA, has chosen Azhar Islam as its candidate for Pakur. Despite Azhar’s familial background in Congress, he is running this time with BJP’s support. This alliance with the BJP could help him attract Hindu voters, while his Muslim heritage may still draw support from the Muslim electorate. According to research, if Azhar can balance both communities, this could present a significant challenge to Congress.

SP’s Akil Akhtar Enters the Fray

Akil Akhtar of the SP has emerged as a significant contender for the Pakur seat. After initially seeking a Congress ticket, Akil is now fighting on the SP ticket. He claims that the SP holds appeal among both Muslim and Hindu communities. Research indicates that Akil’s entry into the race could impact Congress’s hold on its Muslim vote base.

Impact of Caste and Religious Dynamics

Caste and religious equations are deeply influencing the electoral outcomes in Pakur. Research shows that in the 2019 elections, Congress won multiple seats with strong support from the Muslim community. However, the entry of both Azhar Islam and Akil Akhtar into the race this time could lead to a split in the Muslim vote bank, which may pose challenges for the Congress.

AJSU banks on a split in Muslim vote-bank

Political analysts believe that this triangular contest could lead to multiple potential upsets in Pakur. While the Congress is working to maintain its traditional vote base, both AJSU and SP have strategies aimed at attracting Congress supporters.
