Jamshedpur, June 24: The southwest monsoon has strengthened across Jharkhand and is expected to bring widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next week, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The Ranchi Meteorological Centre said favourable atmospheric conditions are developing over the state following the advance of monsoon currents into Jharkhand and neighbouring regions. Rainfall activity is likely to intensify from June 26, bringing relief from recent heat and humidity while boosting prospects for agriculture.
Monsoon Advances Across Jharkhand
The IMD said the monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar, signalling active monsoon conditions across eastern India.
The Northern Limit of Monsoon now passes through several key locations, indicating sustained monsoon activity over the region.
During the past 24 hours, several parts of Jharkhand received light to moderate rainfall, while isolated locations witnessed heavy showers.
Bharno in Gumla district recorded the highest rainfall at 82 mm, followed by Sisai with 76.2 mm and Madhupur with 48.3 mm. Simdega received 35 mm of rain, while Bokaro KVK recorded 15.5 mm.
Temperatures Dip Below Normal
The increased cloud cover and intermittent rainfall have pushed temperatures below normal in many districts.
Ranchi recorded a maximum temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees below normal, while the minimum settled at 22.4 degrees Celsius. Chaibasa recorded a maximum of 30.8 degrees Celsius and Jamshedpur 31.8 degrees Celsius.
Daltonganj remained the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 37.1 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees above normal. It also recorded the highest minimum temperature at 28.2 degrees Celsius. Latehar registered the state’s lowest minimum temperature at 21.8 degrees Celsius.
The weather office has forecast partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at isolated places over the next two days.
Rainfall is expected to become more widespread from June 26, with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers likely at many places on June 28 and 29.
Thunderstorm, Lightning Alert Issued
The IMD has also issued a thunderstorm warning, predicting lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph at isolated locations across the state over the next seven days.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near vulnerable structures during lightning activity.
Southern districts, including East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan, are expected to receive periodic showers and thunderstorms, providing relief from sultry weather conditions.
The rainfall is expected to improve soil moisture levels and support agricultural activities dependent on the timely progress of the monsoon.
With monsoon systems becoming increasingly active, Jharkhand is likely to witness a wetter week ahead, accompanied by cooler temperatures, improved farming conditions and occasional disruptions due to thunderstorms and strong winds.
