THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK
New Delhi, Nov 20: The Jharkhand Pavilion at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2025 is attracting major attention this year, owing to the state’s unmatched leadership in tasar silk production. Jharkhand alone contributes 70% of India’s total tasar output, making it the Tasar Capital of India. This achievement reflects the state’s natural resources, skilled artisans, and a rising rural economy driven mainly by women entrepreneurs.
Jharkhand: The Tasar Capital of India
The tasar sector in Jharkhand continues to grow with a clear focus on:
Strengthening rural livelihoods

Increasing raw silk production
Building a complete tasar ecosystem
Establishing a distinct identity in India’s handicraft sector
The state currently operates:
100 cocoon preservation centres
40 fully equipped project centres
Raw silk production has grown from 90 MT in 2001 to 1,363 MT in 2024–25, firmly placing Jharkhand at the top nationally.
Women play a defining role—50–60% of tasar production work is done by them. Notably, tasar yarn production is entirely done by women, making them the backbone of Jharkhand’s tasar economy.

Schemes Empowering Women in Tasar Sector
The Department of Industries and Directorate of Silk are running multiple programs to strengthen women’s participation.
Through partnerships with:
Jharcraft
Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society (JSLPS)
Women are being trained, provided employment opportunities, and offered consistent market access.
At Common Facility Centers (CFCs) across the state, 30–60 women at each center engage in:
Skill development
Production
Training
Entrepreneurship
Sericulture-based training is also opening new opportunities for young rearers and farmers.

Live Demonstration at Jharkhand Pavilion
A special attraction at the pavilion is a live demo of silk extraction from tasar cocoons.
Trained women artisans demonstrate:
Boiling cocoons
Extracting and preparing silk threads
“Tamsum” artisans showcase traditional weaving using the extracted tasar yarn. This live setup highlights both the cultural heritage of tasar silk and the growing economic independence of women in rural and tribal areas.
