Dhanbad, Oct 17: Long-distance runner Rubi Kumari from Dhanbad has emerged as the district’s golden girl by clinching gold medals in the girls’ 20 years age group at the 18th Jharkhand State Junior Athletics Championship, which concluded at Rajrappa.
Rubi excelled in both the 5000-meter and 300-meter races, establishing herself as a standout performer in long-distance events.
Notable achievements by Dhanbad athletes
In addition to Rubi’s remarkable achievements, Sharda Hansda won a gold medal in the girls’ 16 years shot put event, while Bhumika Ray secured gold in the girls’ 18 years discus throw event.
Sachin Choubey also contributed to the district’s success by winning gold in the boys’ 20 years discus throw.
Overall, Dhanbad’s athletes brought home a total of 16 medals, including 5 gold, 3 silver, and 8 bronze, making the district the runner-up in the girls’ 14 and girls’ 20 years events.

Bhumika Ray shines with dual medals
Following Rubi Kumari, Bhumika Ray garnered additional recognition by winning two medals at the championship. In addition to her gold in the discus throw, Bhumika also claimed bronze in the shot put event, showcasing her versatility and skill in athletics.
Silver and Bronze medalists
Among the silver medal winners were Asha Kumari, who excelled in the under-18 girls’ 400 meters race, and Laxmi Kumari in the girls’ 18 years discus throw. Md Aamir Rijwan also earned silver in the boys’ 20 years javelin throw.
The bronze medalists included Pinki Kumari (shot put), Shirpa Ray (triathlon), Chandni Kumari (triathlon), Amani Kumari (shot put), Rajkumari Yadav (javelin), Puja Kumari (javelin), Karan Kumar (200 meters), and Wrishu Raj (shot put), all of whom performed admirably in their respective events.

Praise from officials
Dhanbad Athletics Association General Secretary Bandhan Toppo expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting that they narrowly missed gold in several events.
District President Kiran Rani Nayak, Treasurer Zubair Alam, District Sports Officer Umesh Lohra, and other officials, including Tarak Nath Das, Sunil Mishra, Abhijit Patra, Balram Singh, Sujesh Thakur, Pradeep Jayram Bhagat, Sarfaraj Khan, Md Farid, Abhishek Kumar, Rana Pratap Singh, Kishan Kumar, and Binod Rao, congratulated the medal-winning athletes for their outstanding achievements.
